Most people who call in sick aren’t just sick of working — they’re really under the weather.
A new survey says 85% of employees are being honest when they say they’re too ill to work — but women are more honest than men.
One in five men admitted taking sick days to loaf around, while only one in seven women told a fib, the poll by TheFit.com says.
In another gender gap, the poll found that employees are more likely to lie about sick time to a female boss.
The No. 1 excuse for calling in sick: a mental health day. That’s what 8% of women and 13% of men cited.
The rest said they were just playing hooky, interviewing for a new job or recovering from a hangover.
The skivvers are creative with their excuses. Careerbuilder.com surveyed bosses last year about the most outrageous stories.
One worker said he hurt his back chasing a beaver. Another claimed to have caught a cold from a puppy. One employee even said they drank anti-freeze by mistake.
Art Papas, CEO of TheFit.com, said he was surprised that so many people are telling the truth.
“Most people who run a business think that people who call in sick are ducking out,” he said. “Bosses are naturally suspicious.”
But maybe they shouldn’t be. A Careerbuilder.com survey last year found that 75% of people sometimes go to work even when they are sick.
